Am I correct to assume that this options disappearance from the Beta 3 mail file template means that this function could not be implemented in time?
As something like this would be very useful in maintaining consistency with the old selection method for those that prefer it.
As I for one, miss the fact I can no longer use my keyboard to select emails, or using the mouse by itself to select my emails. Especially for deletions its very detracting, so much so that I use a machine with 7.0.2 to do anything with selecting, since I can use the keyboard to select or use just the mouse. Since incase no one has really mentioned this, as I myself did not see anyone that has really, with Windows and its selection system you can click and drag to select a number of items, something you cannot do in the new Notes selection system.
The new Notes selection system is a strictly mouse + keyboard affair, making it very cumbersome and annoying in my opinion.
Even if the "solution" was a button to make the mail file render and display as if it were being displayed in a non-eclipse client it would be good. As the current work around is to move to a 7.0.2 box and do anything that requires selection of a few documents there.
The question really is, is it really difficult to be put in a gutter as an optional for those that are used to using the gutter in the new java views? As talking with my customers, I got mixed results regarding gutters.
I found that those that love Notes, were very upset with the lack of gutters, but those that didn't really care if they were using Notes or Outlook, didn't really care. My main concern with this data is that the Notes defenders and advocates in many companies will possibly lose faith in Notes, while the potential new users, still are indifferent about Notes.
Notes has many unique features and quirks that give its users a love/hate relationship with the product. If you plan to resolve some of these issues, please consider carefully what you are doing to your long time supporters of the product. Since it hurts credibility of a employee when they have been saying to management that the gutter selection (or other Notes unique function) increases productivity and is good for the company, and is a reason to keep it. Only to have IBM remove the functionality completely from new products.
Personally I think the new selection model is a great idea, if it is provided as an option for either users or administrators to choose. Having it forcibly removed from only a fraction of the interfaces really hurts Notes in general, as well as provide inconsistencies with the other databases/applications that come from IBM and the Business Partner community.
IBM needs to be very careful with how it solves the unique functionality of Notes, that spur love/hate relationships with the product. If they are not careful there is a high risk of alienating the current supporters and not gaining enough new supporters to fill the gap.
